21 May 2024 – CTSAMVM outgoing Chairperson Maj. Hailu Gonfa and the incoming Chairperson Maj. Gen. Yitayal Gelaw accompanied by CTSAMVM staff paid a courtesy call to Ambassador Timo Olkkonen at the European Union Embassy in South Sudan. This aimed to introduce CTSAMVM’s incoming chairperson and seek enhanced donor support and collaboration from the EU.
Maj. Gen. Hailu expressed his appreciation to the EU for the unwavering political and financial support to CTSAMVM over the years. “The support from the EU has enabled CTSAMVM to undertake the monumental task of Monitoring, Verifying, and Reporting on the implementation of Chapter II of the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan,” Maj. Gen. Hailu said.
Ambassador Timo acknowledged the critical role that CTSAMVM plays in the peace process and reiterated the EU’s commitment to supporting peace and stability in South Sudan. “The EU is committed to supporting peace efforts in South Sudan, and we recognize the vital role that CTSAMVM plays in this process,” he said.
“I am deeply honored to lead CTSAMVM at this pivotal time,” Maj. Gen. Yitaya stated. “Our mission to monitor and verify the permanent ceasefire is crucial for the stability of South Sudan, and I am committed to strengthening our efforts in collaboration with international partners like the EU.”
